SAAWU

The South African Association of Water Utilities is a Section 21 company that evolved from what was previously the SA Association of Water Boards. The ongoing changes in the business environment of the water services sector and the challenges created by the massive backlogs of service delivery, created the need for the establishment of a formal institutional structure to represent, promote and co-ordinate the interests of all public sector institutions involved in the provision of water services. SAAWU was formally established in March 2001.

The main business of SAAWU is to promote the interests of water boards and other public sector water utilities in South Africa and to ensure effective integration and co-operation within the water sector.

SAMWU

The South African Municipal Workers Union was formed in 1987 ad is affiliated to to COSATU, the Congress of South African Trade Unions. Samwu is the largest union in the sector representing in excess of 50% of employees in the sector.

Samwu aims to:

• Orgainise all those employed directly or indirectly in local authority and allied undertakings
• Build a democratic worker controlled organisation
• Build an organisation free of discrimination
• Develop solidarity with other unions nationally and internationally
• To protect and advance wages and conditions of service of its members
• To oppose privatisation afnd to fight for the direct provision of all basic necessities of life by the state at all levels
• To work for the achievement of equal access by all to public services of good quality

NEHAWU

The National Education Health and Allied Union was founded in 1987. The Union is affiliated to COSATU, the Congress of South African Trade Unions, which is the largest federation in the country with more than 1.9 million members. Nehawu is the biggest public sector union in the country.

Nehawu is based on the following core principles:

• Worker control of the union
• Non-racialism
• Worker leadership
• Democratic decision making through mandates and feedback
• Worker solidarity
• International solidarity

UASA

The United Association of South Africa was registered as a trade union in 2002. Uasa is one of the oldest trade unions with a rich labour history dating back to 1894. The main objective of the union is to look after the interests of its members and to foster a spirit of unison among workers in general. The organisation has been formed by the workers, for the workers, to represent their rights and interests in the workplace and to improve working conditions and wages.

UASA is affiliated to the Federation of Trade Unions of South Africa, FEDUSA, representing some 500 000 members at the macro level.

UASA also plays an important role in the international labour arena, joining hand with various international federations that promote global solidarity among workers of the world.
